IPP-how can we stop deforestation through art?

What causes deforestation?

-Burning the forest to make farmlands

-Bush-fire

-Elimination caused by industrialization(the lands of factories or car roads, living places, etc.)

Different aspect of Deforestation

-People who earn their incomes and food from deforestation to get farmlands or factories to work support deforestation. It is a desperate problem for them for their lives and their family.

-We need to be able to convince those people who support deforestation and the people who don’t care how it matters to our daily life.

How can we use art to solve this problem?

-This question led me to the other question. “how do we convince people to solve a problem?” The answer to this question, in my opinion, is two. First, show people how the problem is serious and its importance, and then show the solution you want to suggest. Second, on the other hand, show people how it looks great to live without the problem in their normal life so that it makes people want that life without the problem. To me, to make people want to solve a specific problem in their own willingness seems more powerful and efficient. When it comes to the solution for deforestation through art, I want to make people love and really care about forests, just like they really love and care about their family, friends, their dogs, coffee, delicious brunch, wines, etc. And I believe art can make them love it just like that.

IDEAS about the way to show

A. Film a video that has a touching story -> Split it into single frames per second -> Send those frames to the potential audience. And ask them to draw something they want on each frame per one person. ->Collect the frames back. Arrange them, and convert the frames to the video again.

Explanation: Each of the potential audiences might draw totally different things on different frames of the video. When you combine the frame drawn and changed by the audience, you might be able to see a totally different video or animation showing a story with frames of the video in different styles. This method shows a lot of meaningful aspects. First, the new way to create an animation. Second, the meaning of the participation of your audience in your process to create an animation. this means that it is your work, but it’s also your audience’s works, too. you made this animation with them, together. Third, each frame has a different meaning, because it was re-created by different people. Fourth, the process of producing animation with your audience is also an art. Fifth, the fact, the audience has participated in a work that can change the world, makes people who have participated feel they are one of the people who can change the world, and change their mind to agree with your point on a specific issue, at the same time.

This Idea has been inspired by two different works, Life in a Day(Documentary), Animation works of William Kentridge.

Life in a Day

: the director made this in a unique way. He had asked people in the world to send him videos taken on the same specific day. And he arranged the videos and make it a good movie with a good and meaningful message. And he releases it on Youtube. Although it wasn’t in the time with Covid 19, he shows a quite revolutionary way to create a documentary movie.

William Kentridge

The unique point of his animation is that he drew his animations on unique materials. In other words, he converted specific materials into animation. This aspect would make a connection with my idea to draw something new and different on each frame of your video that has its own story. It’s like the process of breakdown and rebuilding.
